I'd say so. He has been taking a lot of time off recently. It's time for him to shove over and let Sally take over the weather.

A big loss for TVW if he retires. Yes yes anyone can stand there and read the autocue but Jeff has been on TV in WA for a very long time (started on STW) - that is a lot of history right there.
Sure they eye-candy is always a good thing but Jeff was always - in my opinion - a great presenter. Telethon won't be the same without either if he leaves TV altogether!

Its Only a 10 second promo. It has him reading what I said above and then a Black Screen with " 7NEWS. Tomorrow 6.00
I reckon Jeff will stick around for Telethon.
Is anyone able to record his announcement tonight? I will miss it.

The rumour mill has one of the following things happening:
1. Retirement
2. Becoming the new TVW MD (Chris Warton now at The West, so this one has merit)
3. Replacing Rick and Sue as weeknight presenters (
The first two are obviously the most believable ones. I'm leaning towards retirement but Jeff becoming MD and having to step down as weather presenter is a believable situation.
Going to be an interesting day regardless.

Pfft, you suck
Depending on where they place the story I may be able to get it, but I won't be able to get that until tomorrow. Hopefully someone can record it

WAToday said:
Newman has been with the station since 1967 and late today was sent off with a rousing rap from Seven boss Kerry Stokes, who praised his professionalism via a video recorded for the occasion.
"I feel very humble," Newman said afterwards.
"He took the time to make a recording and we replayed it this afternoon in the newsroom."
+ Mr Telethon Jeff Newman retires
I know most of you will be happy that he's "finally" leaving but the man has a lot of history when it comes to WA television and he has done a lot in that time.
Huge loss but of course no one is irreplaceable.
The obvious replacement is Sally which means Emmy is almost certain to get the full time weekend presenting role - that should annoy some of you

I think it was obvious this was going to be the one but its still a shame.
I think he should go while he is still fit and healthy and go on and enjoy his retirement. Done a top job for many years. Looking forward to the highlights tape.

I'd like to see Sally get the weather presenting gig. She's a great newsreader (better than Emmy IMO), but she excels at presenting the weather given her previous experience with The Weather Channel.
Emmy is a lot better than she used to be so I could deal with watching her read on weekends on a permanent basis if Sally were to present the weeknight weather.

Good point. Unbelievable to think he's been with TVW since 1967... and he was around long before that too.
Rick Ardon didn't join TVW until 1978 so Jeff had already been around for almost 10 years by then.

Agreed. He most certainly deserves a decent farewell. Unfortunately that isn't TVW's strong point but Jeff is deserving of one. Will be interesting to see how they do it - it's not unrealistic for them to give him his own show... possibly by dedicating TT to him on his last night - although hopefully they just do an extended TVW News and ditch TT for the night.
