Well there's now less than 3 hours to go :)

Looking forward to seeing this. The build up has been long and intense, so it should be hopefully be a decent launch. They have the resources to do this properly, so I will be very surprised if we are let down by this.

FOXTEL doesn't carry Al Jazeera. It's available through UBI I believe, although most people just downlink it themselves since it's available unencrypted on the Optus C1 satellite.

Time to fire up this thread again... things have obviously settled since the launch!

Did anyone here see the AJE coverage of Saddam's execution? Would be interested to hear anyone's thoughts :)

I think (from my ever-so-slightly biased viewpoint!) that it was well ahead of the curve. We had one of Saddam's lawyers in the studio with us, as well as the host of our weekly 'Inside Iraq' programme. And then the next day, the mobile phone footage appeared pretty quickly with us (not exclusively, but among the first to broadcast it).

Overall the channel is going well. Production from KL was affected by the Taiwan earthquake a while ago... but all is well now B)

Anyhooooooooo (pop-culture reference for all you Daily Show viewers).....

PS: damo/Pun..... re the video wall..... the Doha wall is 13 cubes long and 2 cubes high.... and by my rough estimate each cube is about one metre long, if not a bit more. So, it's pretty freekin big!! KL, London and DC all have much smaller walls.... two of them are 4 cubes long, and the other is 5.... can't remember which though.

I was in the USA, so unfortunately I didn't have access to AJE there... had to settle for CNN's live coverage instead :) Would be happy to see any footage from AJE about the Saddam execution if anyone recorded anything though :)

We showed right up until the trapdoor opened, froze the image, and then left the audio running.

There was a lot of debate about how much to show... I personally saw the whole clip and thought we possibly could have gotten away with showing the opening of the door...... but it was a bit grisly and voyeuristic. In the end, best not to show it.

Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic took the same stance we did.

I saw the video in full on YouTube, including when the trap door opened, and personally didn't find any of the video disturbing although I understand there are people who would have.

Like Kevin, I was also away over Christmas and didn't see any of AJE's coverage of Saddam's execution. The first I heard of it was while I was sitting at a train station and received a breaking news alert on my mobile.

Hi,

I'm new here in this forum- and I have a question? Does anyone have more pics and videos of AJE (especially of news and news promos)?

Thanks

I was shocked when I saw the AJE weather presenter giving the weather for Perth, saying how it's going to be 40 on Wednesday too  They certainly do continue to surprise me.

I'll have that video and more shortly :)

 @ the phono on Al Jazeera at the moment about the riots happening outside a mosque in Jerusalem because of construction work. They're talking to an Arab member of Knesset and in response to the question "Can you update us on what's happening" he replies "I am not a reporter, I cannot update you".

Erm, yeah, my bad ;)

A very confusing time... wasn't told who the guest was until I said it!... that whole morning was pure chaos. But we got there in the end.

Yeah, I could tell there was a bit of chaos behind the scenes. A couple of times I could hear whispering from someone in the studio during a live to one of the female journo's on location. That's rolling coverage for you though... gotta love live television! :D

It was good coverage though. Much better than anything offered by CNNi or BBCW and in the end that's what counts. :)

So, Al Jazeera English said before the launch, that they will bring 24-hour-news after a few months!
Now it's February - so does anyone know, when AJE is broadcasting 24-hour-news?

Thanks

'A few months' is a long time in television :)

I have no idea. I'll see what I can find out :)

They do extremely well at the moment so I can't see why they can't start doing 24 hour news now

The only reason at the moment is staffing numbers. It's a big step up... remember the news desks in the four broadcast centres need to be manned 24 hours a day, plus going to 24/7 means increased output from all centres.

I'll give you a bit of inside word.

The schedule will change... Doha will no longer be 'split' by KL... so Doha will end up doing a big block rather than two smaller blocks. The Newshour, which integrates three centres in one show, will remain as is, perhaps at slightly different times.

Can't give you much else, but rest assured, 24/7 is not that far away.

So intlmedia - how are the things going in Doha? I hope AJE will soon start bringing 24/7 news!
I also work as a journalist at a radio station and so I am very interested in behind - the - scenes - pics. Do you have some?

thanks

Hey Guys

My first post (hopefully of many) I have a few questions on AJE and answers would be great

1. Whatever happened to the business updates. They were broadcast for the first few days and disappeared.

2. Can I just add my voice to those asking when will this all go 24/7?

3. Finally (If I've missed some rule about requests I'm sorry) does anyone have any of the AJE music, I'm willing to trade and all that

All help appreciated.

Hey gang, back with a bit more! B)

Business updates were tried and dispatched with, as far as I know. Anyone who watches AJE knows that financial and market news is not something we give much, if any, time to.

24/7...... well not just yet. We're currently at 15/7... and an increase to somewhere between that and 24/7 will happen very soon, along with a reshuffle of the schedule. Can't say any more than that at this stage... ... just watch early next week :)

Not much more to report from the desert... will work on some behind-the-scenes stuff for those who've asked.
