Interesting article in the Sunday Tasmanian today regarding Hobart's radio ratings, or the lack of...

Quote

Hobart's commercial radio stations are long overdue for a comprehensive independent listenership survey, leaving advertisers without key information on whether they are reaching the audience they pay for.

The last independent survey was conducted in 2002. Leading media research company Neilsen questioned how the stations could justify their advertising fees without recent listenership data.

But several of the stations said they conducted their own surveys and market research and said they would be happy to take part in any independent survey.

Their own survey information and research is not available to the public or competitors.

In other regional cities of comparable size to Hobart, such as Wollongong and Canberra, full ratings surveys are conducted once or twice a year.

Nielsen Media Research managing director Peter Cornelius said it had been an unusually long time between surveys for Hobart.

He said commercial networks needed independent listenership data to justify their advertising fees.

"In a perfect world we would like to see stations in metropolitan cities like Hobart doing a survey every year," he said.

Oops! :helpsmilie:

Sorry about that. I think the Perth one happens later on. They usually release it in the order that I posted.
The Sydney/Melbourne info came through at 10.30am Sydney time so maybe another hour or so.

Massive Edit! It's online now...enjoy B)

It surprises me to see 92.9 in Perth still doing so well with all the doof doof crap they play :yucky:

Not too much movement though (at least in Perth anyway).

How often are radio ratings released?

It's usually about 8 surveys a year but it is variable...

Edit: Here's the table for 2008.

Survey #4 - Tue, Jun 17
Survey #5 - Tue, Aug 5
Survey #6 - Tue, Sep 9
Survey #7 - Tue, Oct 28
Survey #8 - Tue, Dec 2

How do they actually determine all these ratings?

I don't have much faith in those Sydney figures. The ratings this year in those Sydney surveys have fluctuated so much that I'm beginning to think that instead of people being incredibly indecisive, it is actually the ratings process that is fundamentally flawed and causing all these ridiculous shifts.

At the risk of being utterly incorrect I think it's a group of participants who have radio's that are monitored (or maybe they log what station they are listening to) and is paid for by the commercial stations in order to sell their product to advertisers which is why only commercial and ABC stations are rated. I too believe the system is somewhat flawed but I guess the only way of being 100% accurate is to monitor 100% of all radios in the market area. Personally, I would like to see the whole system changed because we have too many stations that are more interested in the ratings than their target audience which is why you don't get a proper 100% "Rock" or 100% "Classic" station.

The fact that MMM in Sydney occasionally slip in some "pop" amongst the rock is something I find rather annoying because I know it's done purely for ratings.

MIX 94.5 is the Channel 7 of radio, people are stuck in their ways from 10 years ago. Same old crap

92.9 is only doing well because they spend truckloads of advertising on bus stops, TV etc and its committed to peoples memory. The fact is its still the same crap from 3 years ago.

After Survey 3 I said the fluctuations in Sydney were ridiculous and that perhaps the people weren't indecisive so much as the system was flawed. Sydney's figures in Survey 5 are frankly even more ridiculous, and are making me question the system even more. To be honest, some of the movements and rankings look completely implausible and incorrect.

Apparently, the 10-17 age group has obviously discovered classics, because they helped push WSFM to 3rd in that demo (behind 2DAY and Nova) with an increase of 7.3%

However, WSFM overall had a dismal survey, collapsing from a fairly healthy 7.5% to just 5.4% - a mere 0.1% ahead of Vega . In fact, Vega increased by almost 1% and are within touching distance of 4th spot in the FM market ahead of WS and MMM, an achievement thought impossible just 2 surveys ago.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Byrne has lost NewsRadio listeners, and David Oldfield managed to hold on to the overnight lead with 2GB despite Jim Ball taking some of his audience over to rivals 2UE

In fact, 2GB recorded increases in all demos, and in particular improved their drive-time result with Philip Clark. Mix also recorded a rather large increase in the afternoon peak.

Also, ABC Classic FM managed to increase its shares in all demos except the 18-24, whilst Mix really turned things around from the previous 4 surveys.

And we're back to normal this survey with no real surprises and the abnormal figures of last survey reversed this time around.

Triple M are into the doldrums and are in danger of slipping below Vega by the end of this year. They're now level with Mix at Breakfast and look like slipping further next survey.

Vega had a poor survey after polling well last survey and it appears WSFM caused it all, with the original classics station stealing back all the listeners it lost last survey. In fact, they've slipped back to their trademark abysmal figures.

702 ABC would be somewhat upset at losing 1.6% for no apparent reason. They've dropped from 2nd to 3rd, but they're still well ahead of Nova in 4th despite losing so many listeners. The one saving grace for 702 would be that all their listeners appear to have left for either 2Day or 2GB.

Speaking of which, Jason Morrison would be stoked at that Breakfast result. Far from losing listeners in Alan's absence, Jason actually improved on last survey, but that could be attributable in part to the Olympics. Philip Clark on Drive remains the only weak spot on 2GB's line-up, which is a shame, but he remained steady this survey and still performed very strongly against Glover and Hamish & Andy.

Yep, pretty routine stuff this survey. Makes a change from the questionable figures of previous surveys.

Is this something to do with FOXfm knocking off 3AW for the first time in 4 centuries? (or was it 5 ? )

I see a lot of negative results in that list for Sydney, with the biggest loss deservedly being 1.2% for 2DayFM. Looks like most of the listeners went for either Nova, WS or 702 ABC.

2GB managed only a small decrease, but it must be worrying times at 2UE after another big decrease. Even more concerning (and astonishing) is Triple M - they've really collapsed in recent times and they're rating worse than Vega for the 2nd time in 3 surveys.

The cricket coverage single-handedly pushed 702's overall share to just under 10% and their Afternoon share to over 11.5%. Their weekend figures were also up.

Incidentally, Ray Hadley mentioned yesterday morning that Brian Wilshire's share (9pm-12am weekdays) for his slot stood at almost 25%, which means Murray Wilton must be around 9-11% for his 7pm-9pm slot.

It's amazing how Brian Wilshire has maintained that top share for such a long time, even beating Stan Zemanik.
Brian Wilshire has been on that timeslot on 2GB for something like 30 years or more :o

2UE have issues... you would think that based on their primary target audience of over 55's they would be putting in some special effort on the financial crisis in terms of updates - particularly in the areas of superannuation, tax, pensions etc.

As for MMM their playlists have been utterly boring in terms of being over-repetitive. They played the same damned thing every day. I guess most stations do that, but it seems to be most noticeable and annoying on MMM.
Having said that MMM have now changed their music again - this time it's "Awesome 80's" and it's 80's for most of the day so this will probably steal some listeners off Vega and maybe 2WSfm - but in doing so, deprives Sydney of any commercial stations playing new rock.

It's an amazing effort - even though I can't stand talkback from 4pm onwards (so boring and slow), he must be doing something right to have a quarter of the audience for 3 hours each weeknight.

But instead they do some silly Wii promotion.

They're having an identity crisis over at 2UE at the moment like Triple M. They've really discovered how much Lawsie brought to the station and how many people have left because Lawsie left - many of whom have now gone to Hadley. But they haven't helped themselves either by shifting regulars around and playing with the whole schedule/lineup and bringing in randoms like Sandy Aloisi.

And why they persist with Peter Fitzsimons is beyond me - I've never liked the man and I suspect a lot of Sydney radio listeners are the same.

I suppose if you limit yourself to one particular era for one particular genre, you're going to have to repeat songs to fill time.

That being said, I hear plenty of repetition from WS - in recent times it's been Shout by Tears for Fears on an almost daily basis (top song though) - and it is very noticeable. However it looks like most people don't care.

But is there a market anymore for rock (both old and new)?

They could take listeners off the other two, but do Sydney listeners really want or need yet another classic 70s/80s music station? It seems listeners are pretty happy with WS, Mix, Vega and 2GO already. I just think if Triple M try and copy their competition they'll only sink further into trouble (just like 9 from 2005 onwards). They need to be different and original, not a carbon copy of others.
