Seven's love affair with all things NBC continues. That's not necessarily a bad thing, given Today and Nightly News are #1 in the US, but blatant copying is a little extreme.
The new Sunrise opener is Today's opener. Completely identical - same colour, same font, same format. No more "Kochie and Mel" either. The logo and set are both heavily influenced by NBC as well.
But I'm not really complaining - Sunrise has never looked this slick and professional before, and it hasn't looked so serious (both in terms of news and 'effort') since the Epping days.
Grant is back as weather guy and frankly, it's about time. The show lost something when he left, I feel. Fifi looks much more at home doing entertainment, and Simon Reeve finally has a decent role as the Sydney-based reporter.
The graphics are interesting - I'm still undecided on them - but I think some very minor tweaking will get them perfect. Interesting to see Duran Duran are gone from the opener, replaced by MGMT and their hit 'Electric Feel', but it's a cosmetic change. Also a cosmetic change is the ticker, which has been replaced by the Flipper (think CNN, etc.).
All in all, it's a brilliant relaunch. That set in particular is just wow!

. Boland's going back to the serious newsy feel of the Epping days between 6am and 8am, but seems to have kept the lighter, fluffy feel of the Martin Place days in the 8am-9am part. It's slick, professional, the news/fluff balance seems better, and Kochie's wearing a tie. Most importantly, though, it might just bring back the viewers.
Over to you, Today.
